Mule Train JNL

Fort Courage JNL is a bold slab serif wood type in the French Clarendon genre, taking its name as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the cavalry fort populated by a number of post-Civil War misfits in the 1960s television comedy "F Troop".

Some of the characters originally had overly-thick vertical strokes which stood out from the rest of the letters, so they were "standardized" in order to provide a more aesthetically pleasing overall design. A vintage piece of sheet music for "Waitin' at the Gate for Katy" from the 1934 movie "Bottoms Up" provided the hand-lettered, Western-influenced lettering which is now available as Badlands JNL.

Sans serif characters re-drawn from old newspaper headlines and used in the design for Late Breaking News JNL were given a slab serif treatment in order to create a condensed type face with both grotesk and block influences.

For many years, each issue of the magazine had its title rendered in different type styles; offering many unique variations to coincide with that month's cover art.
